Nigerian Hairstyles Captured In New Photo Exhibit

The transfer of many cultural aspects from the diaspora are dumbfounding. Even with decades and miles of space between descendents of Africa, there are still indications of a connection. One way we're connected is by hair which is portrayed in the work of J.D. Okhai Ojeikere.

The Nigerian photographer began documenting the hairstyles of women in his country as a member of the Nigeria Art Council in 1968. Decades later his work has resulted in 1000 different hairstyles now exhibited in the "Hairstyles" series at the 55th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezi in Venice; showing until November 24. We found a strong sense of continuity in these photos, because they also can be found in African American homes today.
